Ladislav Scurko murder case

A former Philadelphia Flyers prospect has confessed to murdering a referee in his native Slovakia.

Ladislav Scurko, 23, faces 15 to 20 years in prison after admitting to police that he stabbed Marek Liptaj and buried him in the woods near Kosice, Slovakia in January 2008. Scurko played with Kosice in the Slovakian professional league.
The body was discovered this past December and Scurko admitted to the crime after being questioned by police last week. Police would not reveal a motive for the crime, but the Globe and Mail reported Monday that Scurko might have had problems with gambling.
Scurko, a centre, played three seasons in the Western Hockey League from 2004-07 and was selected in the sixth round (170th overall) by the Flyers in the 2004 Entry Draft. He never signed with the Flyers organization and played the past two years in Slovakia.
